Sunny welcome for new Guernsey air route

Photos by Chris George.

Guernsey looked its best in the spring sunshine as the British Airways' Airbus made its first London Heathrow round trip.

The Airbus A319, registration G-DBCB, was visible on flight tracker apps on the runway at Heathrow just before midday.

It made the short hop to Guernsey in around 40 minutes and arrived early in the bright spring sunshine.

After the passengers had disembarked it was time for a photo shoot with the mainly Guernsey crew and local BA captain, Stef Loveridge.

The Economic Development Committee had negotiated the subsidised BA route over the winter, and its president, Deputy Sasha Kazantseva Miller, was on the apron to welcome the aircraft.

More passengers boarded the return flight than had disembarked and all were given a local treats to welcome the new daily lunchtime link to Heathrow's Terminal 5. A choir was also singing outside Arrivals.

The thinking behind it is improving connectivity from Guernsey, with a direct flight into a major European hub with worldwide connections.

Equally, it is intended that business and leisure visitors use the BA flight and a travel journalist was on board yesterday at the invitation of Visit Guernsey to write articles about the island, to encourage tourists.
