Review into healthcare complaints in Guernsey to go ahead

The new president of Health and Social Care says a review of healthcare complaints will take evidence from both sides before making recommendations.

There is to be a review of the complaints process across healthcare in Guernsey, it was announced in the States today (17 December).

Deputy Gavin St Pier, who has represented 17 families who are unhappy with their treatment, says some experience 'terror' when speaking out against the medical establishment.

In reply, the Health Committee President, Deputy George Oswald, said:

"A working group will be convened to provide recommendations to the committee, regarding actions that could be taken to create greater public confidence, and assurance that learning outcomes are being actioned across HSC."

Deputy Oswald outlined the procedure, saying that both sides, complainants and healthcare staff, will be listened to before making any recommendations for reform.

However, Deputy Oswald says there will not be an independent review into historical cases.

Separately, the Assembly has unanimously agreed to accept the resignation of Jonathan Le Tocq.

The former Chief Minister admitted multiple counts of possessing 2,400 indecent images of children at a court appearance earlier this month.

He has been paid since his arrest in July, but this month's salary will be the last from the States.
