Rare Guernsey breed to sustainably maintain farm land

Three Royal Golden Guernsey Goats have a new home at Les Caches Farm.

La Société Guernesiaise delivered three Royal Golden Guernsey Goats to The National Trust of Guernsey's Les Caches Farm on Monday (10 August).

Their introduction to the historic site aims to preserve and promote the rare breed and maintain the natural environment.

The Lieutenant Governor, Sir Richard Cripwell, met with volunteers as the goats settled into their new surroundings.

"The Royal Golden Guernsey Goat is an indigenous goat, it's a rare breed and we should we're trying to do everything that we can to make sure that the goat that is named after the place we call our home, is preserved and promoted for the future.

"But the goat isn't just a beautiful face, although it clearly is a beautiful face, this really gives us the opportunity to take sustainability and the way in which we manage our environment to the next step.

"These goats are experts at clearing scrubland and maintaining land, and as this herd, this experiment at the moment, continues, we're going to be able to use these goats and the ones that come after them, to help control all natural environment so they'll be giving back as well."

Land Manager for National Trust of Guernsey, Colin Gaudion, says they are grateful to be working with La Société.

"Les Caches Farm is a place where Guernsey's heritage comes alive, and we are absolutely delighted to welcome these beautiful Royal Golden Guernsey Goats.

"Their arrival perfectly complements the story of the farm, allowing visitors to experience not only a traditional Guernsey homestead but also one of the Island's most iconic and historic breeds."
