Prominent Guernsey man appointed Commissioner for Standards

Architect and long-time community stalwart Andrew Ozanne will oversee any interim complaints about politicians.

The States Assembly and Constitution Committee say that Mr Ozanne was one of a strong field of candidates who applied for the interim role while the complaints process is reviewed.

He has recently served as President of La Chambre de Discipline, presiding over professional disciplinary complaints and contributed to Guernsey’s system of government through service in a non-States member role with the former Home Department.

Andrew Ozanne's appointment by the States Assembly and Constitution Committee was unanimous and follows the resignation of Dr Melissa McCullough, who left her position in Guernsey suddenly this month.

This was after deputies, by a majority, voted against her advice to suspend Deputy Gavin St Pier, following a complaint from a member of the medical establishment.

Dr McCullough remains the Commissioner for Standards in public life in Jersey, Sark and Alderney, as it was initially a joint appointment.

Deputy Sarah Hansmann Rouxel, President of the States’ Assembly & Constitution Committee, says it is important that Guernsey has an interim Commissioner:

"The Committee was keen to ensure that the duties of the Commissioner for Standards could continue to be carried out independently and  effectively during this period of review."
