Petition for law to make drivers report collisions with cats

In 2021, Jersey became the first place in the British Isles to introduce the legislation.

Guernsey law requires the reporting of collisions with farm animals and dogs, but not cats.

Kayleigh Mills is calling on islanders to sign her petition to 'change the law so that collisions with cats have to be reported'.

There is currently no requirement to report a collision with a cat (Sections 8 and 14 of The Road Traffic (Guernsey) Ordinance 2019) - however, collisions with a horse, cow, ass, mule, sheep, pig, goat, or dog must be, by law.

Kayleigh has gained support from deputies, and the charity Cat Concern, which is. looking to help her distribute paper petitions.

In 2019, a similar petition was put to the island, but no law change was made. Kayleigh is trying again after two felines were hit on her road in just one week.

"A couple of weeks ago, a cat had been hit outside my house.

"I went out to see what had happened, and it was already deceased on the pavement. The driver had driven off. It was really distressing.

"That's what made me want to change the law.

"Owners want to know what has happened to their pet."

Her petition gained 146 signatures in its first 24 hours, and pleads that reporting collisions could save feline lives:

Cats deserve the same respect as all other animals, and changing the law to make motorists report collisions would ensure the cat has timely veterinary care and its family knows what has happened to their pet.
