New date confirmed for Guernsey charity sleep out

A sleepout in aid of a local homelessness organisation has been rearranged, after safety concerns interrupted the original plan.

The Big Skipton Sleep Out will now take place on Friday 20 March.

The January event was cancelled at the last minute due to severe weather from Storm Ingrid.

The postponement drew online criticism, with some saying it was ironic that a homelessness charity event avoided the conditions faced by those without permanent shelter.

Organisers said they had to prioritise the safety of participants and volunteers.

The event will still be held at the KGV Memorial Fields.

Anyone who already registered does not need to sign up again and will receive updated information.

All money raised will go to Caritas, which plans to build modular housing in Guernsey to help reduce insecure housing.

Chair of Caritas Guernsey, Graham Merfield, says the later date will allow more people to sign up.

“It is no small responsibility to have more than 160 people sleeping out in an exposed area.

"Safety comes first and postponing was absolutely the right call, and we’re thankful for everyone’s flexibility.

"The Sleep Out shines a light on the hidden homelessness experienced by so many locally, and the funds raised directly support our Community Project to provide safe and dignified accommodation.

"We hope the new date will allow even more islanders to get involved and help us continue turning long‑term solutions into reality.”
