Bowler Alison Merrien does Team Guernsey proud with silver on the final day of the Commonwealth Games
Alison Merrien MBE put Guernsey on the medal table on the final day of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
She achieved silver after being beaten by Katherine Rednall two games to nil in around an hour.
Merrien lost the first game to Rednall and then the final, second game.
Alison set up the final after defeating Northern Ireland’s Shauna O’Neill on Friday (31 July).
Today, Alison was up against a formidable opponent.
Katherine Rednall, representing England, is 30 years old and has won multiple indoor bowls gold medals. She’s known to play a power game to knock the opponent’s bowl away from the jack.
Rednall was ranked seventh in the world two years ago. That year Merrien was eleventh.
Merrien, Guernsey’s flag bearer at the opening ceremony, has an impressive palmares with 14 world medals behind her, but this is her first at Commonwealth Games level. She has now competed at five Commonwealth Games, Delhi in 2010 being the last.
Her class showed today despite the loss and she walked away with silver for both her and Team Guernsey.
It is Guernsey’s second consecutive Commonwealth Games silver medal in the sport, after bowler Lucy Beere MBE won silver in Birmingham in ‘22.
The swimming team, many of whom recorded island or personal bests, came back on Friday.
The bowlers, boxers and athletes of Team Guernsey fly back to the island on the Heathrow flight tomorrow lunchtime (3 August).
