HSBC closes its Bridge branch in Guernsey

Two HSBC branches remain in Guernsey, following the closure of the St Sampson's branch.

The HSBC branch on the North Side of the Bridge permanently closes today (24 September).

Bank bosses say they are adapting, as more customers access services through the mobile app or website.

Alvaro Teixeira, who is head of wealth and personal banking in the Channel Islands, says the changes reflect how islanders are choosing to bank with them.

“The way people bank is continuing to change, and we know from our review that the majority of customers have a preference to do much of their day-to-day banking digitally.

"While we have seen a decline in the number of customers using our branches, we’ve developed a model that provides islanders with both the opportunity for face-to-face servicing as well as online banking products and services.”

The bank still has two sites in Guernsey; one on the St Peter Port High Street, which recently celebrated its 125th anniversary, and another in St Martin's.

The latter has recently reopened (5 August) after a five-month refurbishment with a new customer area, meeting rooms and automated equipment.

The two other HSBC branches are in Sark and Alderney.
