'Guernsey's Own' RAF squadron to visit the island

The Royal Air Force squadron dubbed 'Guernsey's Own' will celebrate the 30th of anniversary of receiving an ancient military honour.

In 1994, States of Deliberation officially granted the RAF's 201 Squadron 'The Privilege of Guernsey'.

This is an ancient military honour, that allows them to march in Guernsey with colours flying.

To mark the 30th anniversary of receiving this, the Squadron are coming to the island.

From 12 to 16 September, the troop will attend the firing of the noon-day gun at Castle Cornet, visit the Priaulx Library to see a display set up in their honour, and visit the Allied Aircrew Memorial outside Guernsey Airport to remember the 153 Allied Aircrew who lost their lives in the skies over the Bailiwick.

On Sunday (15 September) the Squadron will exercise the Privilege of Guernsey, and march along St Peter Port's seafront.

The 10am parade will be inspected by His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor and the Bailiff before proceeding to the Town Church for the annual Battle of Britain service.

Wing Commander, Rob McCartney, says it is important to maintain the historical link.

"This September represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the Royal Air Force to re-affirm this affiliation, which remains a significant source of pride for us on the Poseidon Force.

Guernsey has played a fundamental part in our post-war identity, and I look forward to leading the annual Battle of Britain parade with Colours Flying, Drums Beating and Bayonets Fixed as we did 30 years ago.

There are few things better than marching behind a Pipe Band full of swagger, and all of us from RAF Lossiemouth look forward to putting on a show for the islanders who have supported us so loyally over the years.”
