Guernsey's final summer show cancels the fireworks display

A heightened fire risk caused by the dry summer has led to the cancellation of the North Show fireworks.

There will be no fireworks display at the grand finale of the 2026 North Show tonight (27 August), after a summer of heatwaves dried vegetation and increased the fire risk.

The Northern Agricultural & Horticultural Society says protecting the park, its wildlife, exhibitors and visitors is their priority.

Organiser Josh Cotran-Gabriel says cancellation was always a possibility, but organisers hoped the recent rain would improve conditions.

"We were hoping that the rain yesterday and overnight would help dampen down the park, but on assessment this morning, the park and the surrounding areas are just still a bit too dry, and ultimately, everyone's safety is our top and foremost priority.

"We've been liaising with our fireworks provider, Standard Fireworks, as well as Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service, and it's a collective decision.

"Ultimately, the committee makes the final decision. We could go ahead and have fireworks, but we feel it's the responsible thing to do not to have fireworks this year."

Josh says there is still a full programme of events and entertainment into the evening.

"So on our main stage, we've got performances from the Big Band Collective and the Last of the Light Brigade.

"On top of that, we have a fire show in the arena, as well as loads of Titan the Robot walking around, the Vander's Double Wheel Space Wheel of Death, BMX stunt show, as well as an ATV stunt show.

"So there really is something for everyone."
