Guernsey Voluntary Service needs minibus licenced drivers

D1 category licence holders asked to help out for a few hours a week.

The Guernsey Voluntary Service runs two day centres, the Jubilee Social Club in St Sampsons and the Russells in St Martins.

Jubilee Centre manager and transport co-ordinator Cheryl Lowe says the D1 qualified drivers are needed because of significant gaps in their volunteer rota:

"We are really stuck for D1 licenced drivers.

"Some of them are retired, some of them are still working. I'm one of the drivers, and when I drive, which I'm having to do a few times a week, it takes me away from my main job."

A D1 licence in Guernsey is an additional category that enables the holder to drive small minibuses.

The States have agreed to a change in the law, so that anyone with a standard Category B car licence can drive a small minibus of up to 16 seats, as long as it is not for profit.

Cheryl says that law is in the process of being brought in:

"At the moment we're still waiting for the Law Officers, but I believe it has been written."

Until that happens, Cheryl would like any qualified drivers, who can spare a few hours a week, to get in touch.

"The run takes an hour or an hour and a half to pick up the clients, depending on traffic, and the same in the afternoons, finishing about 3pm."
