Guernsey to have 250 homes under development by 2029

The Housing Committee aims to deliver homes itself, alongside projects with the Guernsey Housing Association and private developers.

A lack of affordable housing remains a key concern in Guernsey, despite it being a States priority.

Guernsey's newest political committee, Housing, has published a work plan to tackle the problem.

It aims to have 250 homes under development by the end of this political term with planning permission for a further 100 underway.

The houses will go in already identified urban areas and on States owned land.

Housing is also working with private developers to identify barriers they may experience to getting homes built.

The Plan is multi faceted and includes liaison with the charity At Home in Guernsey to focus on the sort of accommodation needed for those without a permanent address.

At the other end of the housing scale, it is expected that around five Local Market properties per year, that fit certain criteria, will be inscribed on the Open Market.

Housing Committee president deputy Steve Williams says the plan is about getting homes built:

“Delivery really is our key priority and our focus. It’s become apparent that we can only hope to meet the island’s long-term housing needs by supplementing existing development from private developers and the GHA with the States’ own programme of building.

"Housing takes time and we need to ensure that, in the future, housing is ready when it is needed, so we are putting forward a long-term programme of development.

“To deliver this we will need significant financial investment, so we will soon be bringing proposals to the States to request funding for the next phase of the Affordable Housing Development Programme.”
