Guernsey set to break June heat record

Forecasters predict the temperature will climb to 34C by Tuesday (23 June).

One month on from the record breaking late May heatwave, the Bailiwick is already warming up, with highs in nearby Normandy and Brittany at around 40°C yesterday.

An amber warning for extreme heat came in force across southern Britain at midnight.

Jersey Met predicts temperatures in Guernsey to reach 34°C tomorrow and Wednesday (23 and 24 June) which would easily exceed the previous record of 31.8°C.

In Jersey it is set to get even hotter, with the 37°C expected there by tomorrow.

Overnight temperatures on Sunday did not quite reach the threshold to be classed as tropical, where it is at 20°C or above throughout the night.

However, a night's sleep will become more uncomfortable as minimums of 21°C are likely tonight and 22°C tomorrow and Wednesday,

Public Health advice for islanders to best cope with the coming few days of heat is to:

Cool off indoors during the hottest part of the day (11am - 3pm or later) when the UV is at its strongest
Leave strenuous activity for early or much later when it is cooler
Take cool baths and showers
Drink plenty of water and avoid coffee and alcohol
Close curtains, open windows for the breeze, and use fans
Wear a hat and loose light clothing
Wear sun cream that is in date and with a minimum SPF of 30

Forecasters expect the heatwave to begin to dissipate on Thursday (25 June) and by the weekend temperatures are back to the early 20s Celsius.
