Guernsey Coastguard was called to a medical emergency on a French trawler just after 6pm on Monday (10 August).
The Joburg Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre advised that a crew member aboard a 22-metre fishing vessel required urgent medical attention.
The St Peter Port Lifeboat, the Spirit of Guernsey, was launched with two St John paramedics on board.
They reached the vessel, positioned 14 miles off Guernsey's west coast, at 7.19pm.
A French rescue helicopter also arrived and airlifted the casualty to Cherbourg.
The Guernsey lifeboat stayed nearby whilst the winching operation was underway.
The crew returned to St Peter Port by 8.20pm.
Search Mission Coordinator Simon Granger praised everyone involved.
“This was an excellent collaboration between the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre at Joburg, Guernsey Coastguard, St Johns, the RNLI along with the French Military for providing a rescue helicopter.
"All the agencies acted swiftly in sending medical assistance out to casualty and providing the best care possible.”
Despite efforts, the patient has since been declared deceased.
