Food waste prevention app launching in Guernsey

SOS Food Angel is launching in Guernsey to reduce food waste and help households access affordable food.

Inspired by UK schemes like Too Good To Go, the SOS Food Angel app will list mystery bags of food close to their use-by date that islanders can buy at reduced prices.

Co-founder Hansen Canagareddy says he sees his app as a solution to a few problems.

He hopes it will cut the 1,500 tonnes of edible food wasted each year, help households afford food, allow businesses to give away surplus instead of paying to dump it, and lower the cost of exporting waste.

"There's more than 750 households trying to get support from the food banks.

"People think this is just for those who are in need. No, you get the middle class; they want a good deal.

"And there are people who just want to have a nice meal and not overpay for it."

The app will also allow customers to donate bags to local charities and food banks.

Hansen says they've already had many users sign up, but businesses need to get on board to make it work.

"Unfortunately, everyone is just saying, oh yeah, that's a great idea, but no one is doing the first step.

"So we've got a lot of users already signed up - business-wise we don't have any - this is the reason we're doing a launch event."

Owners of local coffee shops, cafes, restaurants, hotels, bakeries and food retailers are invited to learn about the (free) registration at the Duke Hotel on Wednesday (18 March) at 15:30.
