Alderney Fire Brigade Saves Dog From Sheer Cliff

Alderney Fire Brigade has saved a dog that fell from a cliff above Telegraph Bay.

The island's fire service was called to the southern bay at around 3.40pm on Sunday (9 July) after a dog got stranded on the sheer rockface.

The crew spotted it nearly 33 feet down, making it difficult for the team to get access with their vehicles, meaning they had to carry out the rescue by foot.

Members of the fire brigade created anchor points with ground stakes for two of the crew to abseil down.

One of the two team members secured the dog to himself using a piece of webbing, and then a specialist dog rescue harness was fitted so it could be carried to safety whilst attached to the rescuer.

The crew on top of the cliff pulled the two rescuers and the dog up the rockface.

After a big fuss from the crew and a drink of water, the dog was returned to its owners within an hour and 20 minutes of the initial call out.
