Dog tax in Guernsey may increase substantially

Members of Guernsey's ten parishes will meet later in February to discuss raising dog tax to £25 per animal.

Guernsey's parish constables will meet on 9 February to discuss increasing dog tax by 150%.

It currently costs £10 for every animal aged over six months, unless it is a guide or hearing dog.

On the agenda will be a suggestion that the tax is increased to £25.

It has been at the £10 mark since the late 2000s and the tax is payable to the parish authorities by 31 January every year.

They then use it for improvements including footpath maintenance and providing litter bins.

A spokesperson for one of the Constables' offices told us that opinion between parish representatives is divided.

This means it is not a done deal and any increase would need to be brought before the Environment and Infrastructure Committee.
