Auction raises £40,000 each for two Guernsey charities

GSPCA manager Steve Byrne with the dolphins.

The sale of the custom-painted dolphin figures will go to Autism Guernsey and the GSPCA.

The 62 dolphins have been on show at locations around Guernsey over the spring and summer, but now they have found permanent owners.

The highest bid at last night's auction was £1,600 for the dolphin named Fairytale, sponsored by the Guernsey based International Stock Exchange.

GSPCA manager Steve Byrne says many achieved four figures, including one called Hermia:

"The Herm dolphin, which many would have seen on their trips to the island, raised £1,250."

"There were over 100 islanders at the auction, as well as pre bidders."

Funds were topped up with a raffle.

The GSPCA will use the money for its 'big build' animal hospital which is underway, but not yet fully funded.

The director of Autism Guernsey Andrew Sparks says it was a successful event:

“It’s been a privilege to be part of such a creative and impactful initiative.

"The funds raised will make a real difference to the lives of those we support."
