Alderney Children's Centre shortlisted for Nursery World Award

A nursery set up to address a childcare shortage in Alderney has been shortlisted for a national award.

The Alderney Children’s Centre opened in 2022 in response to a shortage of childcare on the island.

It became a registered charity in 2024 and now runs a full-time, year-round nursery.

In January, the centre began teaching children about food production on a neighbouring two-acre farm.

It has now been shortlisted for the Business Development Award at the Nursery World Awards 2026.

The centre is one of five finalists in the category and the only Channel Islands finalist selected by the Nursery World magazine.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on 26 September.

Founder and Director of Alderney Children's Centre Jennifer Heald says she is proud of how they support the community.

"We originally set up back in 2022 to address the critical shortage of childcare on Alderney, which was causing job losses and families to leave the island.

"We've since expanded to help island families even further with a soft play suite, free weekly events, workshops and now the Children's Farm.

"I couldn't be prouder of what my team has achieved."

The charity is raising £6,000 to help expand the farm, including buying more fruit trees, a storage shed, improved irrigation and playground equipment.
