A newly-established local business uses wool from its own sheep to weave Guernsey's that are smooth and not scratchy.
Le Courriqua is the name of the ancient Fief, or estate, overlooking Fort Grey and it is where Denise Fallaize looks after her smallholding and sheep.
She set out with the idea of making a Guernsey to a pre-war pattern with a soft rolled neck and wool that isn't scratchy:
"What I have found is that while we love the Guernsey, we are quietly apologetic about it, saying that it is itchy. However, I believe that it doesn't have to be this way.
"At Le Courriqua we have changed the design to include a 'Jersey Roll' in the neckline, to further soften this area. We are also lowering the micron count of the wool, meaning the fibres are thinner and less coarse.
"We have approximately 80 sheep in Guernsey and have plans to get another 150.
"Each animal gives about two kilograms of wool, so there is currently not enough yarn from the local flock alone.
"We are now working with UK suppliers that has meant we can now include Romney wool and Bluefaced Leicester wool in our designs. The wool from a Bluefaced Leicester sheep as a close as you can get in a British sheep to that of Cashmere wool."
