How Fraudsters are Using WhatsApp and Telegram to Target You
WhatsApp and Telegram are two of the most well-known messaging apps in the UK, but how safe are they?
While both apps offer security features to protect users, fraudsters are still running multiple scams on both apps.

Fraudsters use a variety of techniques to target WhatsApp and Telegram users.
Impersonating Your Family and Friends
Fraudsters impersonating users to request money is common on both apps, though it’s more prevalent on Telegram. As reported by The Banker, reports of authorised push payment fraud cases on Telegram rose more than 200% worldwide in 2025.
Scammers may pose as a relative or friend, claiming that they need money in an emergency. The perpetrators replicate names and profile photos to appear legitimate. AI tools now allow fraudsters to send realistic voice messages, too.
Requests for Verification Codes
If another user tries to use your phone number to create a WhatsApp account, you’ll receive an automatic verification code. A fraudster may contact you claiming that WhatsApp sent the code to you by accident. But if they get the code, they can take control of your account.
Once a fraudster has access to your account, the damage extends well beyond your own data. They can message everyone in your contact list (appearing as you) to run the same scam on the people you know.
They may also lock you out of the account entirely. WhatsApp does provide an account recovery process, but it can take several days, during which your identity is in someone else's hands.
Fake Support Agents
Fraudsters pose as support agents for either app to earn your trust. You may receive a message from a fake agent asking you to provide information to solve a “problem”. However, supplying the requested details would compromise your account.
Fake Job Posts
As reported by the National Fraud Helpline, job scams account for half of all reported fraud on WhatsApp.
You may get a message from a user pretending to be a recruitment agent with a compelling vacancy to fill.
The fraudster’s goal would be to get your personal information for identity theft and accessing your money.
Infected Attachments and Links
Users posing as people you know can send attachments infected with malware or links to untrustworthy websites. Malware could steal personal information stored on your device or lock it until you pay a ransom.
High-risk websites may collect your data by deception or forcibly install software.
How to Protect Yourself Against WhatsApp and Telegram Scams
You can use multiple techniques to defend your account and device against scammers.
Use Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Set up 2FA to stop other users from accessing your account. With 2FA enabled, you’ll need to verify your identity in two ways.
Use a Scam Identification Tool
Have you ever received a message on WhatsApp or Telegram and asked, “Is this text a scam?” Spotting it can be difficult, but a scam identification tool will tell you whether a text is legitimate.
Keep Your Verification Codes Private
No matter who asks for a verification code, never send it. Even a user who looks and sounds like a trusted friend or relative could be a scammer.
Never Click on Suspicious Links
If a contact sends you a message with a link that seems suspicious, don’t click on it. The link could give fraudsters access to your data and device. Delete suspicious messages and warn other contacts to watch out for them.
Verify Urgent Requests
Fake requests will usually be urgent and try to pressure you into acting fast.
If you’re concerned, contact the individual outside of the app to check on them. You’ll probably find that they’re fine and don’t need your help.
Block Suspicious Accounts
Report and block suspicious accounts immediately. If someone has tried to scam you, they’re likely to try it with other users, too. Reporting the issue could help prevent more people from becoming victims.
