Jersey To Host Superhero Series

Up to 500 Superheroes of all ages will have the chance to take part in a 'Find Your Power' challenge this May half-term.

Move More Jersey and the government have partnered with the UK Superhero Series in a Disney Marvel inspired event.

It's aimed at anyone with a disability and their friends and families, as part of a nationwide campaign to highlight everyday superhero powers and inspire confidence.

Around 3,000 people worldwide are expected to take part, covering a combined 50,000 kilometres.

Sophia Warner, Founder of the Superhero Series said, “Following the tremendous response to the ‘At Home’ Superhero events last year in Jersey, we’re super excited to partner again with Move More Jersey and to have the Government of Jersey’s support to enable even more islanders to take part in this Superhero Series Find Your Power Challenge.

Jersey is a unique place, and we hope that this challenge will showcase the opportunities available in the island. We look forward to seeing the largest contingency of disabled islanders taking part in what is set to be a brilliant, empowering and fun event.”

Those taking part can set their own tracked challenge and can use powerchairs, adaptive bikes, kayaks, rollerblades or such-like to achieve their mission.

They can also choose from a range of sensory challenges - such as popping bubbles and fun food tasting tests, or superheroes can invent their own challenge, with their achievements then converted into kilometres towards their mission.

During the challenge week, Move More Jersey will provide a programme of accessible events including walks, cycling at their Cycle Without Limits centre and multisport activity sessions.

Cirsty de Gruchy, Head of Move More Jersey, says it is a fully-inclusive event like no other:

“In Jersey, there are 14,000 islanders living with a disability and two thirds of all households are estimated to have at least one person with a functional impairment.

Having competed in the Superhero Series triathlon at Dorney Lake with my son over the past few years, it has been a personal vision to see similar events in Jersey to make a difference to the lives of those islanders living with a disability.

Following the success of the At Home Superhero Series events last year, Move More Jersey are excited to have been given the opportunity by Superheroes Series UK to partner in this event, which has been further strengthened by the support from the Government of Jersey.

It has enabled us to bring a fully inclusive high calibre event to the local community on a scale the island has never seen before, which we hope will be an incentive to get more islanders active and kickstart new sporting passions. We believe everyone has their own unique powers and cannot wait to see what those islanders taking part achieve.”

Everyone who signs up to take part in the challenge will receive a Super Race Pack containing a Marvel ‘Find Your Power’ medal, T-shirt and finish line tape to celebrate that all-important finishing moment.

Minister for Social Security, Deputy Judy Martin has described it as a 'brilliant initiative':

“As we continue to deliver the Disability Strategy, it is important that disabled islanders feel included and are not discriminated against, and this is a brilliant initiative to help those islanders become more active in their lives. This year has been incredibly difficult for many, and I’d like to encourage all disabled islanders to ‘find their power’ and kickstart their sporting passions.”
