With recent high temperatures, Guernsey Coastguard is urging islanders to prioritise safety when heading in to the sea.
The Bailiwick's sea emergency team flag up “tombstoning” - where people jump off piers and rocks into the sea - as a particularly dangerous activity.
Captain Jerome Davis says there are safer way to cool off.
"We cannot overstate how dangerous it is to quite literally jump into the unknown.
You can never tell what is hidden from view under the surface, such as rocks concealed by the waves, or other objects floating below.
Just the impact with the water from enough height can cause serious injury or paralysis."
He advises those who wish to jump into the sea to do so under the guidance of a qualified coasteering instructor.
If you see someone in the water who appears to be in danger, please call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
