St Helier War Memorial Unveiled

St Helier's new war memorial has been officially unveiled.

It was due to open before Armistice Day, but was postponed because of bad weather.

603 parishioners who fell in the First World War have been listed on the monument.

It was attended by the Bailiff, Lieutenant Governor and the Dean - along with Constable Simon Crowcroft:

"It's already been open and I think people already appreciated the monument, but we thought it was right to have an official ceremony when it would be formally opened."

It's been opened by the descendants of those from St Helier who fought between 1914 and 1918.

Since it was opened, it's been revealed that more work needs to be done to correct a construction mistake.

Constable Crowcroft explains the problem.

"It was simply an error by someone in the factory where it was made, so they've agreed to replace that particular part - which will be done in the coming months."

"The other question that has arisen is that people have contacted us to say that the names of their ancestors who fell in the war are not on the memorial.

"That's clearly something we're looking into. There inevitably will be one or two names missed off and the memorial is constructed in such a way that extra names can be added in due course if they meet the criteria that we used to select the 603 names."

The criteria is that the memorial should only include people clearly associated with St Helier.

They should not already be listed on a memorial in another parish, they should be born in the parish and/or living there for at least five years and/or connected with the parish at the time of death.

They will have served in the armed forces or merchant navies of Britain, France or other allied countries, and who died in military service or as a consequence of it between 4th August 1914 and 31st August 1921.
