Political Divide Over Pay Protests

A group of politicians is demanding a fresh pay offer for the public sector workforce

A letter signed by seven States Members to the Chief Minister (as head of the States Employment Board) and to the unions, is urging both sides to make efforts to 'resolve the current unacceptable impasse'.

It comes after several politicians joined protesters in the Royal Square during a two day walkout by civil servants.

SEB Chair Senator John Le Fondre has refused to bow to demands to better pay rises.

The bitter row is exposing a split within the States Assembly, and the Council of Ministers.

Senator Sam Mezec, Minister for Housing and Children, spoke at the rally and posted this message on Facebook:

"I was pleased to address public sector workers in the Royal Square this afternoon.  My full solidarity with those who come together to demonstrate in support of our public services. We must now enter meaningful negotiations with the Trade Unions. This is too important for the well being of our Island to treat it with the intransigence there has been so far."
