Jersey Signs Post-Brexit UK Customs Deal

Jersey has signed a post-Brexit Customs Arrangement with the UK.

External Relations Minister Senator Ian Gorst has put his name to the deal that will allow trade free of import tariffs and restrictions on quantities after the UK leaves the EU next March.

Similar agreements have been made between the UK and Guernsey and the Isle of Man.

It establishes a UK - Crown Dependencies customs union.

Jersey and the UK are currently in a customs union with the EU and apply the EU's common external tariff, but that will change on leaving the EU Customs Union.

"It's important to secure this union with the UK to allow friction-less, free trade with the UK to continue."

The deal includes:

*tariff free movement of all types of goods, with no quantitative restrictions
*the ability to impose prohibitions or restrictions at border for specific reasons
*participation in a new Joint UK CD Customs Committee
*retention of Jersey's autonomy in fiscal matters
*autonomy in maintaining local customs IT systems

Senator Ian Gorst said the agreement is the outcome of 'careful planning we have been undertaking for UK exit.'
