For the start of Holy Week, Jersey Chamber Choir and St Luke's Orchestra present "Kreuzige": A concert of 17th Century German Passiontide music.
Heinrich Schutz was on of the most notable German composers before Bach. His "Die Siebe Worte Jesu Chisti am Kreuz" (the 7 last words of Jesus on the Cross"
Heinrich Biber's "Rosary" Sonatas are a set of virtuosic pieces for violin. The strings of the violin are re-tuned, representing the torture of Jesus on the Cross, and the music pushes the bounds of technique.
Dietrich Buxtehude's "Jesu meines Lebens Leben is a short Passion Cantata. His "Membra Jesu nostri" is the most significant piece in the programme. A meditation on the Passion of Christ, it contemplates seven different parts of Christ's body on the cross: feet, knees, hands, side, breast, heart and head, combining mystical poetry with words of scripture.
