Birth Pool Back In Use

11th October 2018

Expectant mums once again have the option of having a water birth in Jersey.

The birthing pool on the Maternity Ward at the General Hospital is back in use after a three month gap.

Women have been unable to opt for water-births since July when use of the pool was suspended because of safety concerns.

A ‘very small number’ of babies had needed extra post-natal care.

Guidance has been updated, particularly on how women are helped out of the pool in an emergency. Midwives have had extra training.

The Maternity Unit says expectant mums wanting to use the pool will always be assessed first to make sure it is a suitable option for their labour.

“We are pleased to be able to offer water births again to expectant mums who want to consider the option. Safety has to be our number one priority, and in any situation where there’s concern of this nature, it’s sensible to check our processes in order to ensure they are robust.” – Julie Mycock, Head of Midwifery

There have been 20 pool births at the hospital so far this year.
