Officers were joined at Glenburn Reservoir in Paisley by fire and ambulance crews just after 5.30pm on Tuesday and the body was pulled from the water almost three hours later.
Police Scotland – which sent members of its dive and marine unit to the scene – have said the death is not being treated as suspicious.
The family have been made aware of the discovery, which was made with the help of a helicopter.
A police spokesman said a report would be submitted to coroner and that there would also be a post-mortem to establish the exact cause of death.
Glenburn Reservoir, which is located 13 miles from Glasgow, is near two golf courses and a country park.
