Extra day-trip sailings have been put on to encourage more inter-island sports fixtures.
Condor will offer the trips in Spring next year, to allow teams and individual competitors to take part in day-long activities in both Jersey and Guernsey.
James Tilley from Jersey Sport says local clubs have really pushed for this.
“What the sports have said to us is there is a lack of economic options for day trips between the islands at weekends, which is what really works for sport. Where there are options, often the time available on each of the islands is difficult and the expense, particularly for taking young teams away is restrictive. That’s where this new service will really help.”
Sailings on Sunday 10th March and Saturday 6th April have been scheduled to allow day-long activities in Jersey, while Sunday 24th March and Sunday 12th May have been selected for day-trips to Guernsey.
The services will leave one island at between 9am and 10am and depart between 5pm and 6pm on each of the days.
Three of the sailings are specifically for sports groups, but all islanders will be able to buy tickets for the crossings.
Mr Tilley hopes this is just the beginning of a regular partnership.
“This is the first stage. We’ve found four dates, we want to find more. We are going to continue working with Condor and with the other travel providers, including airlines, to look at future options, other solutions and definitely more dates.”
Condor Ferries Chief Executive Paul Luxon says its a service they want to build on.
“We take our responsibility as the main ferry provider in the islands very seriously, supporting the local and visitor economies, so are pleased to be able to help the sporting community through these dedicated sailings next year, all of which can be booked from the end of April.
“The working relationship with Jersey Sport, the Guernsey Sports Commission and the Sports Tourism Action Group has been very positive and we hope to build on these partnerships and further develop inter-island sporting links.”
These extra day-trips will be available for booking at the end of April through Condor’s Groups department, on 01202 207 242.
