Fishermen Asked To Avoid Bluefin Tuna

11th September 2018

Leisure fishermen are being urged not to target bluefin tuna in local waters.

It comes after one was caught, and landed in Jersey for the first time at the weekend.

The 102-kilo fish caught by recreational fishermen off Jersey’s shores.

Fisheries officers have issued the guidance in response to shoals of the fish being spotted around the island this month.

As well as the local catch, French fisherman netted more than 40 last week which were taken to Granville to be sold.

The species is classed as endangered and can’t be caught in UK waters or by Jersey’s commercial fishermen in local waters.

There’s currently no restriction on recreational fisherman catching them here. Measures are being considered though, and in the meantime, officials are asking anglers not to go after the bluefin tuna.
