Ports of Jersey is spending £720,000 replacing the fisherman’s pontoons in St Helier Harbour.
The existing one are more than 25 years old and in poor condition.
Work will start on 26th February and take around two months to complete.
It will involve the upgrade of equipment at two main areas used by the fishing fleet – La Collette Berting Pontoons opposite La Collette Yacht basin, and the London Berth Landing Pontoon on the eastern side of Victoria Pier.
Changes will include adding 15 more berths and power and water points.
Ports of Jersey says it will ensure the island’s fishing industry keeps to a high standard.
“These major improvement works will provide a purposely designed and built facility that will service both today’s and our future fishing fleet. Throughout the project planning process we have worked closely alongside the Jersey Fisherman’s Association who have played an important role in ensuring the new development will meet the on-going requirements of the Island’s fishing industry”.
Ports of Jersey say disruption during the work will be unavoidable, but that it is putting in place alternative options for fishermen to berth their vessels and land their catch.
