Minister: Parish Responsible For Tunnell Street Safety

The Infrastructure Minister, Deputy Eddie Noel
Jersey’s Infrastructure Minister says no blame lies with him over traffic safety on Tunnell Street.
Deputy Eddie Noel has been quizzed about his department’s actions, amid claims from Deputy Geoff Southern that TTS ruled out rising bollards to restrict access because of cost.
But the Minister says that is wrong, and it has always been a matter for the Parish of St Helier. He says he has asked the Town Hall for minutes of a Road Committee meeting, but has been denied them.
Deputy Noel has been stressing he is not responsible.
“I stand by my answer that my department does not have any jurisdiction over Tunnell Street or Robin Place. The Parish Of St Helier Roads’ Committee is the responsible authority and is the only body that can direct changes to its roads, layouts or operation.
“The decisions made by the Parish Roads’ Committee in restricting traffic to Tunnell Street are not clear or part of public record. My officers have written to the Parish to seek sight of the roads committee confidential agenda, but they were denied.
“It was for the Parish to fund the works on their own roads. They were the masters of their own destiny in this situation.”
