Marriage & Separation: States Debates
14th November 2017
Several important subjects are set to be debated today.
The future of Jersey’s Bailiff as speaker of the States might finally be decided this week.
A vote is due on the Chief Minister’s proposal to replace him with an elected member of the Assembly.
The debate is set to dominate after months of discussion about separating the Bailiff’s role as President of the house that makes the laws as well as being the island’s chief judge.
The recommendation has been made several times over more than a decade, most recently by the Jersey Care Inquiry.
The other main talking point will be changes to the marriage law that will allow same-sex and open-air ceremonies. It is another of Senator Ian Gorst’s proposals. It is likely to get the nod although a Scrutiny Panel has called the law-writing ‘rushed’ and said it will be calling it in for review.
