300 Sign Asbestos Petition

7th August 2018
A petition calling for States compensation for asbestos victims has got more than 300 signatures in its first few days online.

It is Jersey’s first official e-petition to the government.

The petitions.gov.je website has only just gone live.

The first petition on there has been set up in the wake of the death from mesothelioma of islander Brian Coutanche.

Unlike in the UK and France, Jersey’s government offers no compensation to people exposed to asbestos at work who go on to contract the deadly cancer.

The Jersey Asbestos Awareness group – set up by Mr Coutanche’s daughter – is fighting for better support.

If the petition draws 5,000 signatures it could lead to States debate.
