1500 Watch England Exit On Big Screen
England’s hopes of reaching a first World Cup final since lifting the trophy in 1966 came to an end last night.
Their hopes of going all the way in Russia came to an end after a 2-1 defeat to Croatia in extra-time.
The heartbreak was witnessed by fans watching on the Waterfront.
1500 people saw the game on a hastily-erected big screen at Marina Gardens.
There had been jubilant scenes when England went 1-0 up in the first 5 minutes thanks to a Kieran Trippier free kick.
But joy turned to despair in the second-half when Ivan Perisic forced extra-time, where Mario Mandzukic won the match for Croatia.

Organisers of the Waterfront screening have praised those who attended:
Spectators who spoke to Channel 103 were pleased to be there, despite the defeat:
“It’s better than watching it in my front room – the screen is bigger and there’s a good atmosphere here.”
“It’s great – a nice friendly event. Lots of kids having a laugh – it’s brilliant, it really is.”
England will next play Belgium in a third place play-off on Saturday.
Croatia go on to face France in Sunday’s final.
Both those games will be shown on the big screen in Marina Gardens, with gates opening at 1.30pm and 2.30pm respectively.
